“Maharashtra Government Employees Demand Old Pension Scheme (OPS) Restoration
Around 17 lakh government and semi-government employees in Maharashtra are set to hold a ‘Family March’ in every district and tehsil on November 8 to press for the reinstatement of the Old Pension Scheme (OPS). Discontinued in 2005, OPS is favored for its assured post-retirement income.
Vishwas Katkar, a coordination committee convenor, stated that if their demand goes unanswered, they will initiate an indefinite strike from December 14. Their demands also encompass canceling indirect privatization of the education sector and filling vacant positions.
OPS, a central government-approved retirement scheme, provides a monthly pension equal to half of the last salary drawn by the beneficiary. In contrast, the New Pension Scheme (NPS) allows beneficiaries to withdraw 60% of their invested amount after retirement.
Members of the Maratha community are also advocating for reservation, with the Chief Minister emphasizing the government’s commitment to providing job and education reservations and discouraging extreme measures.”
