The Mira Bhayandar Municipal Corporation (MBMC), in collaboration with the social welfare organization ‘Making the Difference’ (MTD), witnessed an overwhelming response from citizens to the Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle (RRR) collection centers. In a heartwarming initiative ahead of Diwali, the collected materials were distributed to those in need.

The RRR collection centers aimed to encourage the donation of unused items such as old clothes, books, utensils, toys, furniture, e-waste, plastic items, footwear, and various other products. These items can be refurbished, reused, or processed to create new ones. The MBMC, working in tandem with dedicated MTD volunteers, established 15 RRR centers at strategic locations in the twin-city, underscoring the importance of sustainable practices and community support during the festive season. This collaborative effort not only promotes recycling and sustainability but also contributes to the well-being of less fortunate individuals during the Diwali festivities.

The Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle (RRR) collection and distribution drive are integral parts of the ‘Meri Life, Mera Swachh Shehar’ (My Life – Clean City Campaign) project, which has been launched under the Swachh Bharat Mission-Urban 2.0, by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA). These centers have received an incredible response, with thousands of visitors not only contributing reusable items but also offering new ones.

Approximately 10 tonnes of collected and refurbished materials were prominently displayed in the Ganesh Dewal Nagar area of Bhayandar (west). The distribution center was inaugurated by the municipal commissioner, Sanjay Katkar, in the presence of MTD president, Deepak Vishwakarma, and generous donors.

The collected materials have been handed over to various stakeholders to undergo refurbishment for reuse or transformation into new products. This initiative has not only achieved the objective of collective action to protect and conserve the environment by fostering sustainable living habits but has also made a significant impact in reducing waste generation. It exemplifies the power of community involvement in promoting a cleaner and more sustainable city for all.
