“A High-Level Committee Recommends Replacing ‘India’ with ‘Bharat’ in School Textbooks and Introducing ‘Classical History’ Instead of ‘Ancient History'”
The high-level committee appointed by the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) to revise school curricula has suggested the replacement of “India” with “Bharat” in textbooks for all classes. Committee chairperson C I Isaac also recommended incorporating “classical history” in place of “ancient history” and introducing the Indian Knowledge System (IKS) into the syllabus across subjects.
Although the recommendations have been made, NCERT Chairman Dinesh Saklani clarified that no final decision has been reached. The NCERT later released a statement saying, “The development of new syllabus and textbooks is currently in progress, and domain experts from various Curricular Area Groups are being engaged. It is premature to comment at this stage.”
Isaac further emphasized the historical significance of the term “Bharat,” noting that it has been used in ancient texts like the Vishnu Purana, dating back 7,000 years.
